Excavator Operator – Metal Picker

About the role

The Excavator Operator – Metal Picker is responsible for safely operating an excavator on the Run‑of‑Mine (ROM) pad to detect, segregate and remove tramp metal and other hazardous contaminants from ore feed streams. The role ensures continuous feed quality and protects downstream crushing and conveying equipment.

Key responsibilities

• Operate hydraulic excavators and associated equipment safely within designated ROM pad areas.
• Inspect ROM material and identify tramp metal, steel objects, wire rope, drill steel, bucket teeth, chains, scrap metal and other foreign materials.
• Remove and segregate identified metal and waste according to site procedures.
• Assist with stockpile management, cleanup activities and housekeeping on the ROM pad.
• Monitor operating conditions, report abnormalities, and conduct pre‑start and post‑operational equipment inspections.
• Record and report equipment defects through established maintenance reporting systems.

Required profile

• Valid Excavator Operator Competency Certificate (BGCSE).
• Minimum of 2 years experience operating hydraulic excavators in mining, quarrying or heavy‑industrial environments.
• Experience on ROM pads, crusher feed areas or metal‑picking operations is advantageous.
• Familiarity with Botswana Mines, Quarries, Works and Machinery Act and related safety regulations.
