Generator Technician

About the role

The Generator Technician is responsible for ensuring the reliability of diesel‑powered generators and associated power‑distribution systems across multiple mine sites. The role focuses on maximizing equipment uptime, preventing power interruptions, and complying with strict safety and environmental standards.

Key responsibilities

• Perform major internal overhauls, disassembly, machining, and precision reassembly of high‑horsepower MTU mining‑grade engines.
• Restore and replace critical components such as turbochargers, multi‑stage fuel injection systems, high‑volume water pumps, and heavy‑duty cooling radiators.
• Conduct scheduled oil changes, replace industrial‑grade filtration units, and analyse oil samples for metal shavings to predict wear.
• Program, wire, and troubleshoot digital generator controllers, including Deep Sea Electronics systems.
• Use specialized diagnostic software to identify mechanical failures, electrical shorts, and performance drops in harsh, dusty mining environments.
• Perform daily inspections of lines, valves, and structural mounts to detect vibrations or leaks before they cause shutdowns.

Required profile

• National Craft Certificate (NCC) in Heavy Plant Mechanic, Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanics, or a related field.
• Minimum 3 years of proven experience in diesel power generation, preferably in heavy industrial or mining settings.
• Knowledge of the Mines, Quarries, Works and Machinery Act and the Mines and Minerals Act.
• Demonstrated project management experience.
