Legal Officer

About the role

The Legal Officer is a full‑time, on‑site position based in Gaborone, providing legal support to the bank’s operations across corporate, SME and support functions.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review and negotiate contracts and a variety of legal documents to ensure compliance with laws, regulations and internal policies.
• Provide legal advisory services to business units, helping them manage legal risks.
• Assist in dispute resolution and liaise with external counsel when required.
• Monitor legislative changes relevant to banking and finance and advise the bank accordingly.
• Prepare legal opinions, reports and contribute to policy and procedure development.
• Support the management of legal risks and ensure alignment with corporate governance frameworks.
• Collaborate closely with stakeholders across corporate, SME and support functions to safeguard the bank’s interests.

Required profile

• Strong foundation in Law and Business Law, with the ability to interpret and apply legal principles in a commercial banking context.
• Proficiency in Contract Law and legal document preparation, including drafting, reviewing and managing agreements.
• Experience in legal consulting or advisory work, providing clear guidance to internal stakeholders.
• Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) or equivalent; admission to practice law in Botswana or eligibility for such admission is an advantage.
• Knowledge of banking, financial services regulations and corporate governance frameworks.
• Strong analytical, research and problem‑solving skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across departments.
• Demonstrated integrity, sound judgment and ability to handle confidential information responsibly.
