Compliance Director

About the role

Absa is seeking a senior Compliance Director to lead regulatory, financial crime and conduct governance across its banking operations in Botswana. Reporting to the Managing Director and accountable to the Board Compliance Committee, the role combines strategic oversight with hands‑on execution in a highly regulated commercial banking environment.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain an enterprise‑wide regulatory compliance framework aligned with Botswana banking regulations and international best practice.
• Provide strategic compliance advice to executive management, board committees and business units.
• Lead the bank’s AML, CFT, CPF programme, overseeing KYC, sanctions screening, transaction monitoring and suspicious activity reporting.
• Direct financial crime investigations, regulatory escalations and remediation activities.
• Design and execute a risk‑based compliance monitoring and assurance programme, integrating compliance risks into enterprise risk management.
• Serve as the primary liaison with regulators and supervisory authorities.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in regulatory compliance, financial crime prevention and governance within a commercial bank.
• Strong commercial acumen with the ability to balance regulatory expectations and business strategy.
• Proven leadership skills to drive an ethical culture and influence senior stakeholders.
