HSE Manager – Renewable Energy Project (Botswana)

About the role

The leading international renewable energy developer seeks an experienced HSE Manager to oversee health, safety and environmental activities for a 500 MW utility‑scale solar PV and battery storage project in Botswana. You will guide HSE strategy from construction through commissioning, ensuring compliance with local legislation, lender requirements and international standards.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement project HSE strategies, objectives and performance targets.
• Promote a proactive safety culture across all stakeholders and conduct regular site inspections, audits and safety engagements.
• Ensure compliance with Botswana HSE legislation, environmental permits, ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 standards.
• Review and approve contractor HSE plans, risk assessments and permit‑to‑work systems.
• Monitor high‑risk activities such as lifting, electrical work, excavations and work at height.
• Support ESIA commitments, environmental monitoring, biodiversity, waste and pollution prevention.
• Lead incident investigations, root‑cause analysis and corrective action implementation.

Required profile

• Proven experience managing HSE on large‑scale renewable energy, power generation, mining or industrial construction projects.
• Strong track record of overseeing contractor HSE performance in complex environments.
• Excellent knowledge of Botswana HSE regulations and international lender requirements.
• Ability to drive continuous improvement and embed HSE considerations throughout project phases.
