About the role
The Director of Flight Operations provides strategic leadership, operational oversight and regulatory compliance for all flight‑operations functions. As the AOC post‑holder, the incumbent is responsible for restoring operational stability, aircraft utilisation, crew productivity and cost discipline while ensuring safe, reliable and commercially viable airline operations. The role reports to the General Manager and sits on the Executive Committee.
Key responsibilities
- Maintain real‑time operational control, manage disruptions and coordinate network activities.
- Develop and execute a Flight Operations strategy aligned with the airline’s turnaround plan.
- Ensure full compliance with mandatory training, licensing and regulatory requirements (ICAO SARPs, CAAB, IOSA).
- Optimise crew utilisation, dispatch and cabin operations while maintaining safety and customer focus.
- Implement performance appraisal systems, competency‑based assessments, line checks and proficiency checks.
- Drive data‑driven operational efficiency and maintain up‑to‑date operational documentation.
- Uphold zero tolerance for safety and regulatory breaches as the accountable AOC post‑holder.
Required profile
- Degree in Aviation Management, Aeronautical Science, Engineering or Business Administration.
- ICAO English Proficiency Level 4 and a valid medical certificate.
- Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) and Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) – mandatory.
- 10‑15 years relevant experience, including at least 5 years in a senior leadership role such as Chief Pilot or Flight Operations Manager.
- Experience in AOC environments, IOSA audits, multi‑fleet or regional airline operations and, preferably, airline turnaround or restructuring projects.
- Minimum 10 000 flying hours as Captain on large aircraft as defined by CAAB.
Required skills
