Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)

About the role

The Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) works across the primary phase, providing teacher release and delivering learning activities to whole‑class, small‑group and individual settings. This position supports the teaching team by ensuring continuity of learning when the class teacher is absent.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver planned learning activities to the whole class, small groups, and individual pupils.
• Provide teacher release by supervising and managing the class in the teacher’s absence.
• Support the classroom teacher with preparation, organisation, and implementation of lessons.
• Monitor pupil progress and report observations to the teaching staff.
• Maintain a safe and inclusive learning environment.

Required profile

• Relevant HLTA qualification or equivalent.
• Experience working with children in a primary school setting.
• Confidence and competence to manage a class independently.
• Strong commitment to delivering high‑quality learning experiences.
