Safety Officer – Shaft Sinking (Jwaneng)

About the role

We are seeking a Safety Officer to lead safety, health, and environmental (SHE) initiatives for our shaft‑sinking operations at the Jwaneng mine. The role is pivotal in fostering a zero‑harm culture and ensuring compliance with Botswana mining legislation and international standards.

Key responsibilities

• Promote and maintain a zero‑harm safety culture across all operational areas.
• Monitor compliance with company SHEQT policies, procedures and standards.
• Conduct workplace inspections, safety audits and facilitate hazard identification and risk assessments.
• Ensure environmental compliance, investigate incidents and manage corrective actions.
• Maintain statutory SHE records, permits and certifications, and support regulatory inspections.
• Oversee contractor SHE compliance, including inductions, training and audits.
• Prepare and submit incident reports, safety performance statistics and regular SHE reports.
• Participate in safety planning, operational risk reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.

Required profile

• Matric certificate or equivalent with a relevant safety qualification.
• Botswana blasting licence.
• Minimum 5 years experience in shaft‑sinking or underground mining environments.
• Proven experience in incident investigations, auditing, risk management and ISO system implementation (ISO 9001, ISO 45001, ISO 14001).
• Strong knowledge of Botswana mining legislation and environmental regulations.
